MBTA plans diversions for three subway, two commuter rail lines in March
Many subway and commuter rail riders will continue to experience disruptions in March.
A slew of diversions are planned for the Red, Mattapan, Orange, Green, Haverhill and Newburyport/Rockport lines, the MBTA announced Tuesday.
Shuttle buses will replace parts of Red Line service on two weekends, March 4-5 and 25-26 between Harvard and JFK/UMass stations, and on evenings beginning at 9 p.m. from March 20-23 between Braintree and North Quincy stations.
Orange Line service will be suspended between Ruggles and North Station during the weekend of March 11-12 and in the evenings beginning at 9 p.m. from March 27-30 between Wellington and North Station.
Green Line trolleys will be replaced with shuttle buses between North Station and Government Center, from March 11-12.
Buses will replace Mattapan Line trolleys on weekday evenings beginning at 9 p.m. from March 6-9, to remove a broken staircase at Milton station.
Commuter rail service will also be replaced on the Newburyport/Rockport Line between Swampscott and North Station from March 20-28, and on the Haverhill Line between Haverhill and Reading stations from March 4-12.
Both commuter rail disruptions will allow for the installation of the federally-mandated safety system, Automated Train Control, which sends signals to trains about potentially unsafe conditions, automatically slowing and stopping a train if needed, the T said.
Orange and Green Line closures on March 11-12 will allow for the continued demolition of the Government Center Garage by private developer HYM Construction.
Track work, including the replacement of rail fasteners, will also take place on the Orange Line that weekend. MBTA crews will perform “critical tamping work” along the Orange Line track from March 27-30.
This tamping work will also be performed on the Red Line from March 20-23. The line’s two weekend diversions will allow for the installation of a new digital signal system to replace the existing analog system between the affected stations.
No diversions are planned for the St. Patrick’s holiday weekend, March 18-19.
