Odell Beckham Jr. becomes free agent after clearing waivers, per reports

Odell Beckham Jr. is a free man.

The three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver cleared waivers and became a free agent Tuesday, according to multiple reports. The Browns officially released Beckham Jr. on Monday, with a reported $7.25 million left on his contract. The Patriots could not claim him outright without almost doubling their available cap space beforehand.

In six games with Cleveland this season, Beckham caught 17 passes for 232 yards and zero touchdowns. He’s reportedly seeking to join a contender for the remainder of the year. According to NFL reporter Josina Anderson, Beckham is weighing several options and won’t rush his decision.

The Patriots have $4.42 million in cap space, per Over The Cap. The front office released backup offensive lineman James Ferentz on Monday, creating an open roster spot that Beckham could theoretically fill.

The Pats must also decide Wednesday whether they will activate backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham and/or defensive lineman Byron Cowart off the Physically Unable to Perform list, or those players will miss the remainder of the season.

If the Patriots sign Beckham, he would join a wide receivers room that already includes Nelson Agholor, Jakobi Meyers, Kendrick Bourne, N’Keal Harry and Gunner Olszewski. After signing a 2-year, $22 million contract in free agency, Agholor has largely disappointed this season with 22 receptions for 335 yards and two touchdowns. He’s caught as many passes as backup running back Brandon Bolden and 24 fewer than Meyers.

The Patriots will host Beckham’s old team, the Browns, on Sunday at 1 p.m.
