Massachusetts reports 5,248 coronavirus cases over the weekend, as infection counts keep rising
State health officials reported 5,248 new coronavirus cases over the weekend as infection counts continue to rise, while the state’s COVID-19 hospitalization level also increased.
The 5,248 infection tally was a jump of 1,209 cases over last weekend’s three-day total of 4,039. The weekend before that was 3,243 cases.
The daily average over the weekend was 1,749 cases, compared to the daily average of 1,346 infections last weekend and the daily rate of 1,081 cases during the previous weekend.
Virus cases had been declining after climbing for months amid the more highly contagious delta variant. But infection tallies are again on the rise.
After the new 5,248 virus cases, the seven-day daily average of cases is now 1,478. The daily average was 1,129 infections a few weeks ago.
The positive test average is now 2.32% — up from 1.68% in late October, but the rate is still down from 2.98% several weeks ago. The daily positive test rate for Monday’s report was 2.50%.
The state reported 24 new COVID deaths, bringing the total recorded death toll to 19,189. The seven-day average of deaths is now 10.7. The record-low daily death average was 1.3 in mid-July.
There are now 554 COVID patients hospitalized in the state, up 32 patients from 522 total patients on Friday.
The state reported that 127 patients are in intensive care units, and 71 patients are currently intubated.
The seven-day average of hospitalizations is now 532 patients, which is down from 682 patients several weeks ago.
Of the 554 total hospitalizations, 220 patients are fully vaccinated — or about 40%. Those who are unvaccinated are at a much higher risk for a severe case.
More than 4.8 million people in Massachusetts are fully vaccinated, and more than 5.5 million people have gotten at least one shot. The state reported that 789,001 people have gotten a booster dose.
