Mac Jones describes ‘cool team moment’ with Patriots celebrating Jakobi Meyers’ first TD

Perhaps the signature moment of Sunday’s win over the Browns, and perhaps the defining moment of the season, came after Jakobi Meyers’ first career touchdown catch in the fourth quarter.

It took Meyers three seasons to secure that catch, and the reaction of his teammates after the score was priceless, as every player fled the bench and headed to the endzone to congratulate the receiver and celebrate with Meyers.

Mac Jones, during his weekly appearance on WEEI’s “Merloni & Fauria” talked about Meyers and the ensuing celebration.

“It’s obviously been a long time. He deserves it, and he’ll have plenty more opportunities for that,” said Jones. “I thought it was just a cool team moment.”

After the game, Meyers said the celebration was more important to him than the touchdown itself. Jones agreed it was a great illustration of the closeness of the team.

“That was a great example of in that moment, everyone was just so excited,” said Jones. “It just shows what type of team we are. That was just one moment, there’s plenty of other moments, whether it be something good or bad where we come together. That’s just a good example.”

Jones also said during the pigpile, everyone was searching for the ball, to make sure Meyers would have the memento.

“It was one of those moments where we were all in there. I knew the ball was somewhere down there, so we were all trying to find it and make sure he had it. It was super important to him.”

Brian Hoyer, who came in during the fourth quarter, threw the touchdown pass to Meyers. Jones wasn’t upset he didn’t get to throw the pass. He was happy that it was Hoyer, since the two have been together as Patriots longer.

“When Jakobi first got here, they got a chance to work together,” he said. “I thought it was cool just to have that moment between them . . . it’s a team sport, and we’re all happy for anybody that gets a chance to score. That makes it a lot of fun.”
