Patriots QB Cam Newton’s injured throwing hand isn’t broken, further testing required

Patriots quarterback Cam Newton is undergoing further testing on his injured throwing hand after the team determined it was not broken shortly after Friday’s OTA practice, a source told the Herald.

Newton missed the second half of practice after injuring his right hand during a positional drill. He repeatedly flexed his hand and bent over in apparent pain after sustaining the injury. Newton was then briefly examined by team physician Dr. Mark Price and head trainer Jim Whalen.

He stayed on the field for the remainder of practice and watched the team’s other quarterbacks execute team drills. Newton also conferred with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and team owner Robert Kraft, who was in attendance.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick declared Newton the team’s starter in late April. It is expected first-round rookie quarterback Mac Jones will push him for the starting job in training camp.
