Chic, comfy spring footwear is simply sandal-ous
If you’re anything like me, it’s been more than a year of wearing a lot of sneakers. Or slippers. Or heck, half the time just trudging around the house in socks or bare feet.
But with life opening up, we need to up our footwear game — big time, and fast. No more worn-out ol’ slippers, or toes that haven’t seen a pedicurist’s magical handiwork for eons. And please, no more boots for a while, either. It’s now time for the big reveal: ankle- and toe-baring, warm weather slides, sandals and mules, all awash in colors and patterns that reflect the season’s joyful urge to step out.
The key words are edgy but comfy. Fashion-conscious and luxurious but not teetering and pinching. Happily, that perfect balance can be found in so many cool, pretty, innovative, fun, and funky styles all over the market. Here are a few on my favorite designs out there right now:
Let’s kick things off with some gladiator chic. The strappy, steeped-in-history sandals harken back to ancient Rome, and their flattering laces come in all colors and sit on all kinds of platforms. Isabel Marant’s Melyz Leather Ankle-Wrap Espadrilles ($570 on gretta.co) represent a cross of the gladiator (note the open-toe, crisscross-y and wraparound straps) with a classic espadrille platform. Cute and vampy at once, they’re a hybrid creation that makes just about any outfit.
Also a gladiator-inspired design, Stuart Weitzman’s Women’s Goldie Lace Up Embellished Sandals ($450 on bloomingdales.com) is another hybrid — this time a mix of feminine and masculine. The flat, unisex foundation gets a big boost from a Ghillie lace design and pearl embellishments at the straps. Wear them with everything from eyelet dresses and shorts to beach cover-ups.
Meanwhile, chunky, cushioned sandals are having a serious moment. Stylish and wear-everywhere comfy, Christian Louboutin’s Tonal Spike Pool Slide Platform Sandals ($560 on neimanmarcus.com) are a perfect example. In fact, pool slides are getting snapped up left and right, in anticipation of a super fun summer.
Another example: Gucci’s Pursuit Pool Slide Sandals ($360 on bloomingdales.com). The interlocking GGs are cleverly superimposed over floral print canvas on these open-toe slides (and the molded rubber footbed keep your steps firmly in place around the slippery pool).
Want to take things up a few inches? Then raise your heel height a tad and go in for Rag & Bone’s Sommer Suede Platform Wedge Mules ($325 on saksfifthavenue.com). Sure, the suede wedges may not be great around water, but they’re right at home at any patio shindig or dinner party on the deck. They’re also a delight to wear, thanks to a molded memory foam footbed and lightweight cork wedge.
And for anyone who makes comfort such a priority that they haven’t ever worn anything all summer except for Birkenstocks? You don’t have to give that up in order to shine, thanks to Birkenstock’s Arizona Split ($115 on zappos.com). The white/gold Birko-Flor version brings mod white together with metallic in color-blocking cool, and the slip-on is set over a deep heel cup in the footbed to keep your body weight evenly distributed.
And if laying around the pool all day — and wanting easygoing flats — doesn’t stop you from bringing out the megabling, reach for a pair of Christian Louboutin’s Loubi Spike Rubber Pool Sandals ($395 on bergdorfgoodman.com). The latex rubber flip pool sandals have a flat heel, and a light but sturdy rubber outsole. So you give up nothing on style (witness the metal spiked thong straps), and don’t sacrifice an inch on stability and comfort, either.
