Suspect in fatal Haverhill stabbing held without bail
A Haverhill man has been held without bail after his arraignment Tuesday on murder charges in connection with an early-morning stabbing, authorities said.
Evanda Jackson, 46, pleaded not guilty in Haverhill District Court to one count of murder in the killing of Izayah Cruz.
Assistant District Attorney Jessica Strasnick said that at about 3:48 a.m., Haverhill Police responded to numerous calls reporting a motor vehicle crash in the area of Boardman and Water streets.
When they arrived, they found Cruz, 21, of Haverhill, suffering from a single stab wound to the chest, she said. He was transported to Merrimack Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim’s brother was also in the vehicle, Strasnick said. He told investigators that his brother had been involved in an altercation on Kimball Street. At some point during the confrontation, she said, the defendant allegedly stabbed the victim once in the chest.
A probable cause hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 7 via Zoom.
