Chiefs of Police Association endorses Julie Hall in 4th Congressional district race
Republican candidate Julie Hall who is challenging Democratic nominee Jake Auchincloss for the open 4th Congressional district seat snagged an important endorsement from the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association this week.
The endorsement letter stated Hall’s “demonstrated commitment to Massachusetts Law Enforcement Officers is greatly appreciated by the men and women in blue across the Commonwealth. In these turbulent times, you stood with us.”
This is Hall’s second endorsement from a police group and is in line with a larger trend by many police organizations and unions in backing Republican candidates — particularly ones who vocally stand against progressive calls to “defund” police and who support President Trump — as battles over police reform legislation rage in Massachusetts and on Capitol Hill.
“In these turbulent times, more than ever our Chiefs need our support to keep our communities safe. I stand with them, because they want to improve the delivery of law enforcement services with more training and professional development. We must do more to support our police and not engage in foolhardy measures that serve a political agenda and do not serve the people of the 4th Congressional District,” Hall said in a statement.
In August, the Fraternal Order of Police endorsed Hall, also citing her strong support for law enforcement.
In separate statements, Hall said she was “humbled” and “honored” to receive each of the endorsements.
Hall said she supports an “increase (in) funding for modernized training that will move policing efforts forward and new technology and equipment that will aid officers in protecting our communities and making them safer.”
She has also defended Trump’s support of military and police in a recent appearance on WCVB’s “On the Record.”
The FOP has also endorsed President Trump along with a number of pro-law enforcement candidates for federal office nationwide.
“No organization that cares about organized labor, criminal justice or racial equity should be endorsing pro-Trump candidates. Donald Trump undermines workers’ protections, flouts the rule of law and fans the flames of hate,” Auchincloss told the Herald on Monday.
Both Hall and Democratic opponent Auchincloss are military veterans. Hall is a retired Air Force colonel and former Attleboro city councilor. Auchincloss is a former Marines captain and current Newton city councilor. The pair are vying to replace outgoing Democratic U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy III, who gave up his chance at re-election in the Nov. 3 contest in a failed bid for the U.S. Senate against Democratic incumbent Sen. Ed Markey earlier this year.
