Division 3 Super Bowl preview: Duxbury vs. Springfield Central
The schedule may say its the Division 3 Super Bowl, but when Duxbury and Springfield Central meet on Saturday night it will be a showdown involving a pair of the top programs in Massachusetts.
Duxbury (9-3) dropped its first two games of the 2019 campaign but has looked like its old dominant self since then. Leading the charge is do-it-all playmaker Will Prouty who has emerged as a threat in all three phases of the game. Since taking over the reigns at quarterback, the senior has been nothing short of sensational while contributing game-changing efforts on defense and special teams. For the season Prouty has over 1500 yards passing, 1000 yards rushing, and 40 total touchdowns. Running back Tim Landolfi has over 800 rushing yards while sophomore wide receiver Brady Madigan has six touchdowns.
“As Will (Prouty) goes we go,” Duxbury coach Dave Maimaron said. “Overall we’ve gotten better every week. It’s been a team effort. (Central) is a super talented team. They’re fast, physical, athletic. It’s going to be a challenge.”
Defensively the Dragons have been stellar during the tournament surrendering just 28 points over four postseason games. Leading the charge is a defensive line that includes Garrett Shackett, PJ Mullin, McCain Dunlap, and Matt Perenick. Landolfi stars at linebacker while Sam Heppenstall helps hold down the fort in the secondary.
The Dragons will face their toughest challenge to date as one season after claiming the Div. 3 crown, Springfield Central is hoping to repeat in 2019. Under head coach Valdamar Brower the Golden Eagles have been a force to be reckoned with this season. On top of defeating Central Mass. power St. John’s to reach Gillette Stadium, Central also challenged itself against a trio of Div. 1 powers handily defeating Everett, putting up 42 points on Central Catholic, and taking top-ranked Catholic Memorial to the wire.
“We’ve been trying to make the most difficult schedule we can to prepare ourselves for moments like this,” Brower said. “We have had a lot of challenges. All year our motto has been adapt, attack, and dominate.”
Highlighting the Central attack is freshman quarterback William Watson who already has a number of Division 1 collegiate offers. Running back Marcus Crawford and wide receivers Joseph Griffin and Isaac Boston complement Watson to create a prolific Springfield offense. Defensively, the Golden Eagles are paced by a ferocious front that has found itself in the opposing backfield early and often. Cori Jackson, Terry Lockett and Tyson Thornton headline the unit up front while Mahari Miller has been a standout playmaker in the secondary.
