Malden man arrested after sneaking onto tarmac, into plane at Logan International Airport

A Malden man is facing a slew of charges after breaching security and sneaking onto the tarmac and into a plane’s cargo hold at Logan International Airport on Monday afternoon, but police said they do not believe the man had any “terrorist intent.”

Massachusetts State Police were called to Termical C at 12:32 p.m. for a report of a man who slipped through an emergency exit door without authorization to access the tarmac and enter the cargo hold of a JetBlue plane. He was immediately removed by JetBlue ground operations staff, police said in a statement.

Sergiu Parfeni, 31, of Malden was arrested and charged with trespassing, disorderly conduct, and interfering with aircraft operation.

State Police bomb-sniffing dogs swept the cargo hold Parfeni entered and indicated “nothing hazardous or suspicious was located,” according to police.

Police did not say what motivated Parfeni to break onto the airport tarmac and sneak onto the plan, but said it “thus far has found no evidence that Parfeni acted with terrorist intent.”

Parfeni is expected to be bailed from the barracks into a family member’s custody and will appear in East Boston District Court for arraignment.
