TechBoston defense smothers Boston English/New Mission
DORCHESTER – With the weather wreaking havoc, it was only fitting that TechBoston did the same before its bye week.
TechBoston forced four turnovers, including three fumbles, with the final recovery being returned for the go-ahead score from 35 yards out to lift the Bears past Boston English/New Mission, 12-6, and clinch at least a share the Boston City League North title.
“The defensive coordinator prepared them all week,” Tech coach Raul Brown said. “This was a defensive win. Offense couldn’t really do much with this weather with only a couple opportunities.”
A botched handoff for Boston English/New Mission (2-4) led to a fumble recovery for senior Bademba Bah who then ran it back for 35 yards to give Tech Boston (4-2) its first lead of the night, 12-6. The two-point rush failed, but it was the defense’s turn to make another stop.
The Eagles got the ball back with a little over six minutes left and ran it all the way to the Bears 30 with 37 seconds left. They went for a pass, and sophomore Isaiah Monteiro came up with the lone interception on the night to seal the victory with 29.7 ticks on the clock. One kneel down later, Tech Boston had a much-needed win before heading into its bye week. The Bears will face Charlestown in two weeks.
The other TechBoston score came in the early third quarter as the first of two Tedeck Rogers fumble recoveries set up a 3-yard rushing score for sophomore sensation Julius Gillard to knot the score 6-6.
“(Gillard) is still learning the offense,” Brown said. “I need him to be more of a leader and to take control of this offense. If he doesn’t, then we will continue to make mistakes.”
Gillard and the Bears offense had trouble not only passing the ball, but running it as well in the elements. However, Boston English/New Mission didn’t fare much better.
The lone score for the Eagles came with 6:15 left in the second quarter as they went 71 yards on just five plays, including two 26-yard runs by Chris Smith and Keesean Kerr. Senior Luke McDonald punched it in from 17 yards out to make it a 6-0 halftime advantage for the Eagles.
