Immigration protesters arrested at State House

Protesters sitting in House Speaker Robert DeLeo’s office were arrested Thursday night after state troopers told them the State House was closed and ordered them out.

The activists, from the groups Movimiento Cosecha and Never Again Action, were demanding DeLeo push forward legislation that would allow illegal immigrants to receive driver’s licenses.

The State House closes at 6 p.m. But the protesters ignored the troopers’ request that they leave and were arrested, according to a police spokesman.

They will be charged with either trespassing or disorderly conduct.

During the protest, Movimiento Cosecha wrote on Twitter: “13 PEOPLE ARRESTED inside of @SpeakerDeLeo’s office after an hours-long sit-in demanding #LicensesForAll!  Speaker DeLeo, Rep. (William) Straus, and all of the politicians who have refused to move forward licenses for all are complacent while immigrants live in daily crisis.”
