Team effort carries unbeaten Revere past Lynn Classical

REVERE — A player as talented as Joe Llanos can be enough to carry a football team to victory on a lot of nights, but to accomplish the goals Revere has this fall, the Patriots will not be able to do it alone.

The hosts proved they are much more than a one-man show at Harry Della Russo Stadium in a 43-26 victory Friday over Lynn Classical. Llanos had another huge performance with 202 yards rushing on 22 carries and two scores, but he was just one of five Revere players to visit the end zone as the Patriots improved to 3-0 on the season.

“I’m not the only threat,” Llanos said. “Having five different people score makes a big difference. If we do that, no one is going to stop us.”

Revere never trailed, making the Rams (1-2) chase them for most of the night. The Patriots scored on their first two possessions and built a 20-0 edge on touchdown runs from Jonathan Murphy and Zach Furlong, and a 22-yard pass from Calvin Boudreau to Lucas Barbosa.

“That was huge, because there is no quit in them,” Revere coach Louis Cicatelli said of Lynn Classical. “If that game goes another quarter, who knows. It could have gotten hairy.”

Classical was able to move the ball on a Revere defense that had surrendered just eight points entering the game. Quarterback Daniel Gisonno threw for 289 yards and running back Kelvin So added 168 on the ground, but the Rams gave away two fumbles and were stopped on downs three times in Revere territory.

Still, Classical cut it to 20-7 with a drive at the end of the half and took less than a minute to score to open the third quarter as So made it 20-14 with the first of his two TD runs.

But that was as close as the Rams got. After they did an excellent job of making Llanos work for yards in the first half, the Patriots star ripped off scoring runs of 54 and 35 in the second. Rayan Riazi had a big impact after the break as well, drilling a key 44-yard field goal that had plenty of room to spare and also returning an onside kick attempt 55 yards to paydirt for an exclamation point with two minutes to play.

“This is a very good football team,” Cicatelli said. “The key, like any high school football team, is to stay healthy. If we can do that, we can make some noise. There is no doubt in my mind.”
