Bruins sign Ian Mitchell to one-year extension
While much of the hockey world awaits a deal for Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark – not to mention Monday’s hugely anticipated Game of the Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers – the B’s made minor signing on Sunday.
The B’s extended defenseman Ian Mitchell with a one-year, two-way contract worth an NHL cap hit of $775,000.
Mitchell, obtained from the Chicago Blackhawks last summer in the Taylor Hall trade, appeared in just 13 games in Boston with two assists and a plus-6 rating. The 25-year-old Mitchell played 42 games in Providence with 6-18-24 totals and a plus-10 rating. He was originally taken in the second round of the 2017 draft by the Blackhawks.
Meanwhile, it appears that the Ottawa Senators remain the lead dance partner for the B’s in a potential Ullmark deal, which has yet to get over the finish line. One holdup could be the Sens and the Ullmark camp working out a long-term extension. Ullmark will be going into the final year of his four-year deal that carries a $5 million salary. The Senators had reportedly been on Ullmark’s no-trade list but that he’s willing to waive that, most likely with a long-term extension making it a more desirable location.
How much an extension affects the return remains to be seen. It’s believed that the B’s are zeroing in on Ottawa’s second first round pick (25th overall), though there could be other moving parts. Defenseman Jakob Chychrun, who has one year left on his deal that carries a $4.6 million cap hit, is name that has been bandied about, though his potential involvement may require another asset going back to Ottawa.
