4th of July weather forecast for Boston: Wicked humid rain and thunderstorms possible when fireworks are planned
Heading to the Esplanade for the Boston Pops and fireworks? You’ll definitely want to pack a raincoat.
The very muggy trend will continue for the rest of the holiday weekend, as local meteorologists predict rain and thunderstorms for Monday and then on Tuesday for the Fourth of July.
Boston fireworks are planned for Tuesday night, and it could be rainy and stormy in that timeframe, according to the National Weather Service.
“There will likely be showers and thunderstorms as you get into Tuesday evening,” Matthew Belk, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Boston office, told the Herald on Sunday.
The main threat will be torrential rain and localized flooding with any of the thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening on the Fourth of July. Gusty winds are also expected.
Dewpoints will be in the upper 60s and lower 70s, which is quite humid and tropical. Temps should be in the lower 80s.
The annual July 4 Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade is expected to have fireworks at about 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Ahead of the holiday, there could be a few strong to severe storms on Monday afternoon into the evening, generally northwest of the Boston to Providence corridor.
The storms on Monday should pop up from west to east starting at around 2 p.m., and exiting the eastern waters of Massachusetts around 11 p.m.
“It is important to reiterate the lightning threat as lightning will be more prevalent than any strong to damaging wind gusts… as many people will continue to spend time outdoors given it is the holiday weekend,” the National Weather Service’s forecast discussion reads.
When it comes to temps, it will be downright warm and muggy. Temps will be in the mid-80s with dewpoints on either side of 70.
After the rain and storms on Tuesday, it should finally be drier on Wednesday and Thursday. But it’s expected to be very warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s.
The risk for a few showers and thunderstorms then comes back on Friday and Saturday, with the humidity as well.
