Ravens cut veteran DL Calais Campbell in cost-cutting move

Shortly after NFL free agency opened on Monday, the Ravens announced they have released Calais Campbell.

The respected veteran defensive lineman, who was under contract for one more season, had a $9.4 million cap hit in 2023 and was scheduled to earn a $2 million roster bonus and $4.5 million in salary. By cutting him, the Ravens created $7 million in cap space.

Campbell, 36, spent the past three seasons with Baltimore. Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta did not rule out the 15-year NFL veteran “returning to our team in the future.”

“Calais defines what it is to be a Raven,” DeCosta said in a statement. “He personifies professionalism, and his contributions to our organization — both on and off the field — are immense.”

Campbell, a six-time Pro Bowl selection, announced last month that he was returning for a 16th NFL season. Last season, he tallied 36 tackles, 5 1/2 sacks and 14 quarterback hits in 14 games.
