Bill Belichick declines to address Patriots’ inactivity at NFL trade deadline
FOXBORO — The Patriots are the only team in the AFC East that did not complete a trade within a week of Tuesday’s trade deadline.
Last week, Bill Belichick said director of player personnel Matt Groh and director of scouting Eliot Wolf would handle most of those negotiations and bring any talks to his attention that were “relevant.” On Wednesday, Belichick declined to say whether that happened.
“Well we’re done, (the) trade deadline’s over,” he said. “So we’re moving on to the Colts.”
Were the Patriots close to striking a deal?
“Nothing happened, so we’re moving on. I don’t know what close means,” Belichick said. “What does that mean? I’ve had conversations that have gone on for months, and nothing happened. I’ve had conversations that have gone on for six to 10 minutes and the trade gets done. So I don’t know what that means.”
Earlier, Belichick was asked if the team’s inactivity indicated he was content with the roster. The Patriots are currently 4-4 and projected to hold the fourth-most cap space next offseason, per Over The Cap. They also hold extra draft picks in the fourth and sixth rounds of the 2023 draft and zero selections in the third or seventh rounds, factors that may have contributed to their decision to stand pad.
“Well, we’re always looking to improve,” he said.
