‘Electrical failure’ on MBTA commuter rail train causes significant delays

An “electrical failure” on a commuter rail train at the Hanson MBTA station caused significant delays on the Kingston Line Friday evening.

“There was an electrical short in the relay cabinet that produced some smoke in the locomotive cabin on train 055, the 3:33 p.m. train to Kingston,” Keolis Commuter Services spokesperson Sheri Warrington said.

The issue caused the train to become disabled and block a grade crossing in Hanson, she said.

“In compliance with safety protocols, train dispatch reached out to local first responders to manage the vehicle traffic in the area and ensure there was no risk of fire due to the electrical failure,” Warrington said.

Significant delays were seen through the night, with trains running nearly two and a half hours behind schedule at one point, according to an MBTA commuter rail tweet.

The disabled train was eventually moved, Warrington said, and passengers were accommodated by the next train in the schedule.

The incident is under investigation.
