3 people shot and killed in Boston over the weekend: ‘Extremely alarming,’ Michelle Wu says of recent incidents
Three people were shot and killed in Boston over the weekend after police responded to another fatal shooting late Sunday night in Dorchester, as Mayor Michelle Wu called the frequency of recent incidents “extremely alarming.”
The three gun deaths come after a woman was fatally shot one week ago.
On Sunday at about 10:30 p.m., Boston Police responded to a call for a person shot in the area of 482 Geneva Ave., in Dorchester. Upon arrival, officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. Boston EMS transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Early Sunday morning, officers responded to a call for a person shot in the area of 40 Fairlawn Ave., in Mattapan. Officers found a woman suffering from gunshot wounds, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has been identified as Jasmine Burrell, 33, of Mattapan.
The first fatal shooting of the weekend happened at about 1 a.m. on Saturday when officers responded to a call for a person shot in the area of 39 Baird St., in Dorchester. Officers found a man suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim has been identified as Daniel Sanders, 36, of Dorchester.
“The intensity and the frequency of recent incidents has been extremely alarming,” Mayor Michelle Wu told reporters on Monday, “And even more so, the frequency with which we’re now seeing young people and women as the victims in more of these situations.
“And so we’re working really hard to just take down every possible barrier and silo,” Wu added. “Our schools’ teams are huddling with public safety and youth centers and community partners, and wrapping around and bringing in faith leaders and other community partners to say, ‘This is a moment where we all have to come together and address community violence.’ ”
These shootings are “horrifically traumatic to our community members,” the mayor said.
She noted that shootings are down in the city year-over-year. As of last week, there had been 117 total shooting incidents in Boston so far this year, a decrease from 142 total shooting incidents at the same time last year. There had been 146 total shooting victims (both fatal and non-fatal) so far this year, a drop from 166 total shooting victims at this time last year.
“The three gun deaths in Boston this weekend along with the shooting death of another woman just a week ago have stunned and saddened us all,” Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement.
“Our communities are strong, but the constant flow of illegal firearms into the hands of people happy to pull a trigger has a terribly corrosive effect,” he added. “I thank everyone who is working to address these acts of violence and I hope our combined efforts can reduce these shocking events.”
Boston City Councilor Erin Murphy tweeted, “There. Has. Been. Way. Too. Much. Violence. In. Our. City.”
“I will continue to work with the @bostonpolice, community activists and violence task forces across the city to make our streets, our playgrounds and our schools safe for everyone!” Murphy added.
Boston Police is investigating the three weekend shootings. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Boston Police Homicide Detectives at 617-343-4470.
