BC defense to be tested by Louisville QB Malik Cunningham
There is a misconception in FBS that a “dynamic” collegiate dual threat quarterback is really a runner that can throw.
That conventional adage would certainly apply to Louisville’s Malik Cunningham, who is recognized as the ACC’s definition of a college dual threat quarterback.
Cunningham comes from the same school and system that produced Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback Lamar Jackson, a Heisman Trophy winner, first-round draft pick and the NFL MVP in 2019.
BC coach Jeff Hafley believes Cunningham is a quarterback who can use his feet and arm with equal dexterity. Hafley has dealt with it in the past and expects to see it again when the Eagles (1-3, 0-2) host the Cardinals (2-2, 0-2) on Saturday (noon) at Alumni Stadium.
“I think he is one of the most dynamic players in all of college football and I’m talking as a quarterback,” said Hafley. “Let’s not get this the guy’s really not a quarterback thing because he is.
“He tries to stay in the pocket and make plays in the pocket and he is throwing the ball better. I thought he threw it well last year. Forget about being one of the most dynamic players in all of college football. I think he is one of the best quarterbacks.”
Cunningham was the dominant presence on the field last season when Louisville beat BC 28-14 at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, Ky., on Oct. 22.
Cunningham was the game’s leading rusher with 133 yards on 16 carries and three touchdowns. He also completed nine passes for 107 yards.
Cunningham is the Cardinals’ leading rusher this season with 395 yards, tops at his position in the ACC. Cunningham averages 7.1 yards per carry, with a long of 43 yards, and six touchdowns.
He is an efficient passer who has been programmed for short and intermediate routes. He has completed 65-of-107 passes for 782 yards for a 60.75 completion percentage and 122.70 passer rating.
“He is so efficient and his completion percentage is ridiculous from 15 (yards) and below,” said Hafley. “That’s where they seem to have most of their passing game go. That is where his numbers say he is efficient so they throw underneath more.
“But they will take their shots down field and they have hit some. They are a team that is going to run, run, run and then take the top off.”
