Massachusetts drownings: 28-year-old man pulled from Medford pond will not regain consciousness
A 28-year-old man who was recovered from a Medford pond and rushed to the hospital on Sunday will not regain consciousness, according to police.
The Medford 911 Dispatch Center at around 11:15 a.m. received an emergency call from a person at Wright’s Pond.
“The caller was frantically screaming for help for a friend that was underwater and did not resurface,” Medford Police wrote about the drowning incident.
When police and fire arrived at the pond’s swim area, they determined that the person they were looking for was not in the swimming section.
With the help of the dispatcher, they discovered that he was at the far side of the pond — which is the north side. That area of the pond is not visible from the beach side, and is not a designated swimming area.
The police officers and firefighters made their way around the pond to where the person was underwater. Two of the firefighters could see him underwater and they jumped in to get him, along with a police officer who made his way in to help pull the person from the water.
They were able to pass him to several other officers and firefighters at the shore. The victim, a 28-year-old man, was carried through the woods to a Medford Fire Department 4×4 off-road vehicle that took him to Route 28, where an ambulance transported him to Massachusetts General Hospital.
While at MGH, doctors determined that the drowning victim no longer had brain activity. He has been kept alive until his family, who live in India, is properly notified by doctors.
“We can not stress enough for people to use designated beach and swim areas when swimming in ponds and lakes,” Medford Police said in a statement. “The other sections of those bodies of water can be very dangerous to swim in even for experienced swimmers.”
