Multiple shark alerts reported along Cape Cod, beaches shut down to swimming

Several great white sharks were spotted off Cape Cod on Thursday, triggering beaches to shut down to swimming — in what is becoming the new normal along the Cape.

The shark alerts from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy were coming at a fast clip on Thursday. Apex predators were seen from the south in Chatham to the Cape’s northern edge in Truro.

“White shark spotted off of North Beach Island, Chatham,” stated the first “Shark Alert” of the day on the Sharktivity app. “About 100 yards from shore.”

Earlier in the day, the 10-foot male white shark named “Snoop Dogg” was detected at a buoy in Chatham. Snoop Dogg was tagged last year, and his favorite spot last summer was Chatham’s Monomoy Island.

Also on Thursday, swimming at Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro was shut down for an hour after a confirmed shark sighting.

A spotter pilot reported seeing a shark off of Eastham, as well as a shark off of Chatham.

Thursday happened to be Shark Awareness Day.

“It’s #SharkAwarenessDay!” the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy tweeted. “Did you know that white sharks were designated as a protected species in most federal waters in 1997 and in Massachusetts state waters in 2005? Beforehand, white sharks were hunted and considered a trophy hunt for recreational fisheries.”
