Red Sox 2B Trevor Story misses second consecutive game with non-COVID illness

Trevor Story was out of the lineup for a second consecutive game due to flu-like symptoms as the Red Sox opened their series against the Tigers on Monday.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said earlier Monday during an interview on MLB Network Radio that Story – who missed the Red Sox’ Sunday night victory over the Yankees – was traveling separately from the team to Detroit and was expected to join them on Monday. The hope is the second baseman will be available for Tuesday’s game.

Cora said on Sunday that Story’s illness is not COVID-related. He tested negative.

Story made his debut for the Red Sox in the first two games in New York, going 0-for-5 on Opening Day before recording a double in Saturday’s loss.

Jonathan Araúz took Story’s place at second base for a second consecutive game, while Travis Shaw made his season debut. He started at first base instead of Bobby Dalbec, who hit the game-winning home run in Sunday night’s 4-3 victory over the Yankees.
