Patriots reportedly re-signing captain Matthew Slater to 1-year deal

Patriots special teams captain Matthew Slater is returning to New England on a 1-year deal, according to ESPN.

His new contract is reportedly worth $2.62 million and is fully guaranteed. Slater is coming off his 10th Pro Bowl campaign and 11th year as a team captain. He will turn 37 in September and has spent all 14 years of his career in New England. Last season, he totaled 11 tackles, most since 2018, and played in every game.

Last month, Slater won the 2021 Art Rooney Sportsmanship award, an annual honor given to an NFL player who “best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.”

The Patriots have now re-signed their two longest-tenured players, Slater and safety Devin McCourty, plus another seasoned veteran in backup quarterback Brian Hoyer. Slater and Hoyer have been guaranteed a combined $5.62 million on their new deals.

The structure of McCourty’s deal is not yet known.
