What Bill Belichick told Bills QB Josh Allen in the locker room after Patriots’ Wild Card loss

Shortly after the Patriots lost 19-17 against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in early October, Bill Belichick ventured into Tampa Bay’s locker room to seek out his old quarterback.

The two hadn’t spoken since Brady left New England. They reportedly spoke for several minutes. The contents of those conversations ultimately remained private, and the two cordially went their separate ways.

Three months later, after another disheartening loss, Belichick swung the doors open of the home locker room in Buffalo last Saturday. He wanted to speak to Josh Allen, who had decimated his defense with an unprecedented performance during a 47-17 Wild Card playoff win.

Speaking Thursday on The Pat McAfee Show, Allen opened up about their conversation.

“He came up to me, which is really cool. I’ve got a lot of respect for him and what he’s done over his career. And obviously he’s one of the, if not the, greatest coach of all time,” Allen said. “So for him to come up to me after a game and give me some kudos and dap me up, meant a lot to me just knowing the type of coach that he is, the type of players that he’s been around, coached, and obviously the success that he’s had throughout his career.

“It was a pretty cool moment for me.”

As for what was said, Allen indicated Belichick was highly complimentary of his play. Allen steered the Bills into the history books that night, becoming the first NFL team ever to not to record a punt, turnover or field goal attempt in a single game. Instead, Buffalo scored a touchdown on seven straight possessions before kneeling the clock out.

Allen went 21-of-25 for 308 yards and five touchdowns, plus 66 yards rushing.

“Just more respect like, ‘What you did out there was awesome. You played well tonight. We didn’t have an answer,’” Allen said. “Again, I shared respect right back, obviously, because I’m a big fan of his and I could go on and on about the accolades that he has. But again, for a coach to do that, that high caliber, was pretty special.”
