Dorchester man accused of grabbing child during a Roxbury school recess, charged with kidnapping and assault

A Dorchester man is facing kidnapping and assault charges after he allegedly grabbed a child during a Roxbury school recess and tried to pull the kid away, according to the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office.

Charles Marriro, 58, was arraigned in the Roxbury Division of Boston Municipal Court on Friday after he was charged with kidnapping a child and assault.

Marriro allegedly approached three students at the David A. Ellis Elementary School in Roxbury during their recess on Dec. 15. He’s accused of grabbing one student by the arm, and attempting to pull the child away. He also asked another student to play basketball with him.

The students ran away from Marriro and told school staff about the incident, who then called the Boston Police Department. Police were able to obtain the man’s handprints from a student’s arm, as well as a photo of the man, leading to his arrest Thursday.

Marriro was held without bail pending a Dec. 29 dangerousness hearing.

“These young students handled this frightening situation perfectly,” Suffolk DA Rachael Rollins said in a statement. “They ran away and immediately notified a supervising adult. I am grateful for the excellent work by Boston Police and for the courage and strength of these elementary school students.

“Children should expect to be safe and protected at school,” she added, calling the incident “one of a parent’s worst fears,” and said her office will ensure the affected children have access to support and services they need.

The DA’s Office advised calling 911 in a situation like this one, but noted that other resources are available to survivors of child abuse and their non-offending caretakers.

Those resources include the Children’s Advocacy Center of Suffolk County at 617-779-2146, and the Child Protection Unit at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office at 617-619-4300.

Anyone who believes that a child in Massachusetts may be the victim of abuse can call the Department of Children and Families’ Child at Risk Hotline at 1-800-792-5200. Those concerned that a child is being exploited online may report a Cybertip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST or www.cybertipline.com.
