White shark seen attacking seal off coast of Cape Cod in new video

Summer may be long gone, but sharks haven’t left Cape Cod yet: a new video from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy shows a white shark preying on a seal near the shores of Monomoy Island in Chatham.

“Even though we have passed peak season for white shark activity along the Cape Cod coast, it is important to note that white sharks are still in the area,” the group tweeted Wednesday, along with a video credited to a boater identified as R. Nossa.

The video, which was shot November 7th, captures a shark apparently thrashing a seal around very near a sandy beach.

Summer tourists may assume shark activity is highest around the Cape during the summer months, but peak white shark season typically extends from August to October, according to research from the Atlantic Shark Conservancy.

In 2020, the number of shark detections the conservancy found around Cape Cod dropped by 50% during the month of November as water temperatures plummeted. By December, the conservancy recorded just 450 shark detections.

A new study indicates white shark attacks on humans are often a case of mistaken identity, with sharks confusing people for their preferred meal: seals.
