Panthers QB Sam Darnold cleared to start against Patriots; RB Christian McCaffrey activated
The likelihood the Patriots will see both Panthers starting quarterback Sam Darnold and running back Christian McCaffrey for Sunday’s game have improved.
According to reports, Darnold, who has been in the concussion protocol, has been “cleared to start.”
That isn’t necessarily a drawback for the Patriots, given Darnold is 0-3 lifetime against Bill Belichick & Co, with six interceptions thrown while he was with the Jets.
Darnold, however, also has a shoulder injury that leaves his status as “questionable” for Sunday’s game at Bank of America Stadium.
If Darnold winds up not playing, backup P.J. Walker, who played in the XFL last season, will get the start. Walker’s career completion percentage is 49.3% with a 42.0 quarterback rating.
As for McCaffrey, whom Belichick referred to as one of the most explosive players in the league, the Panthers activated him off Injured Reserve with hopes that he’ll play.
McCaffrey has missed the past five games with a hamstring injury. They’ll likely work him out and he’ll be a game-time decision.
So the status for both players has certainly been upgraded.
