Massachusetts reports 3,243 coronavirus cases over the weekend, nearly 500,000 booster shots given
State health officials reported 3,243 new coronavirus cases over the weekend, as COVID-19 hospitalizations stayed steady and the state’s booster count approached 500,000 residents.
The 3,243 infection tally was similar to last weekend’s three-day total of 3,173 cases. The daily average over the weekend was 1,081 cases, compared to the daily average of 1,058 infections last weekend.
Virus cases had been climbing for months amid the more highly contagious delta variant, but infection tallies have been lower in recent weeks.
After the new 3,243 virus cases, the seven-day daily average of cases is now 960. The daily average was 1,898 infections several weeks ago.
The positive test average has been coming down. The percent positivity is now 1.60%, down from 2.98% several weeks ago. The daily positive test rate for Monday’s report was 1.66%.
The state reported seven new COVID deaths, bringing the state’s total recorded death toll to 19,003. The seven-day average of deaths is now 8.9. The record-low daily death average was 1.3 in mid-July.
There are now 531 COVID patients hospitalized in the state, an increase of one patient over the weekend.
The state reported that 137 patients are in intensive care units, and 75 patients are currently intubated.
The seven-day average of hospitalizations is now 527 patients, which is down from 682 patients several weeks ago.
Of the 531 total hospitalizations, 189 patients are fully vaccinated — or about 36%. Those who are unvaccinated are at a much higher risk for a severe case.
More than 4.7 million people in Massachusetts are fully vaccinated, and more than 5.3 million people have gotten at least one shot. The state reported that 480,176 people have gotten a booster dose.
