Massachusetts reports 1,848 new coronavirus cases, breakthrough case count on the rise

State health officials on Tuesday reported 1,848 new coronavirus cases, as total COVID hospitalizations in the Bay State rose again.

The state Department of Public Health also reported 5,313 breakthrough cases from last week, which was up from the tally of 4,608 breakthrough infections during the previous week. The breakthrough count has been climbing in the last couple of weeks.

After the new 1,848 daily virus cases, the seven-day average of daily cases has now jumped to 1,435. This is up from the daily average of 1,127 infections a few weeks ago.

The positive test average has also been rising, now standing at 2.61% — up from 1.68% a few weeks ago. The daily positive test rate for Tuesday’s report was 3.44%.

The state reported 24 new COVID deaths, bringing the state’s total recorded death toll to 19,214. The seven-day average of deaths is now 9.0. The record-low daily death average was 1.3 in mid-July.

There are now 599 COVID patients in the state, a daily jump of 45 patients.

The state reported that 124 patients are in intensive care units, and 63 patients are currently intubated.

Of the 599 total hospitalizations, 230 patients are fully vaccinated — or about 38%. Those who are unvaccinated are at a much higher risk for a severe case.

In the weekly breakthrough report, the state reported a weekly increase of 140 fully vaxxed patients. That’s a bit down from the previous weekly increase of 147 fully vaxxed patients. There have been 2,080 hospitalizations among fully vaccinated people in Massachusetts, which represents 0.04% of those who are fully vaxxed.

There was a one-week increase of 41 breakthrough deaths. That’s up from the previous weekly increase of 30 deaths. The state has reported 509 breakthrough deaths, or 0.01% of those who are fully vaxxed.

More than 4.8 million people in Massachusetts are fully vaccinated, and more than 5.5 million people have gotten at least one shot. The state reported that 807,009 people have gotten a booster dose.
