Mac Jones on Patriots rallying around him after cheap shot: ‘That was cool.’
Mac Jones never wants to see his teammates get into any fights and thrown out of a game in the name of defending him.
That being said, the rookie quarterback still thought it was good to have members of the offensive line rally around him midway through the second quarter of Sunday’s win, after Chargers defensive lineman Jerry Tillery knocked Jones to the turf.
The whistle had been called after the Chargers called a timeout, but Tillery still took a shot at Jones.
Led by center David Andrews, the Patriots came to the young quarterback’s defense, letting Tillery know that kind of move wasn’t acceptable. A brief scum ensued before order was restored.
Jones’ reaction?
“That was cool,” he said during his weekly appearance on WEEI’s “Merloni & Fauria” Monday. “I didn’t want anybody to get in trouble or get kicked out of the game. But I definitely think that it was very nice of them to have my back.”
Jones didn’t have much to say on the subject immediately after the game, but expanded a bit with the show hosts.
“At the end of the day, it’s just a bang-bang play. I don’t know if the guy heard (the whistle) or not. I’m not him. I don’t know what he heard, or didn’t hear,” said Jones. “I was proud we didn’t get any big fights, but the principle was there, though. It was nice of them to have my back.”
