Guard Brevin Galloway getting a fresh start at Boston College

Boston College guard Brevin Galloway is getting a do over on familiar terms in a better place.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound graduate transfer from the College of Charleston will make his BC debut when the Eagles host Dartmouth in the season opener on Tuesday night (8) at Conte Forum.

“I am really excited about playing in the ACC and being in Boston and this is a once in a lifetime experience for me,” said Galloway, following the team’s media day practice on Thursday at Power Gym.

“I have to capitalize on this opportunity and make the most of it. I feel like being in a new environment like this has been good. It has been refreshing and just getting a fresh start and having a whole season all over again.”

BC opens the campaign under new head coach Earl Grant, who was hired to replace Jim Christian on March 17 after a long successful tenure at Charleston. Galloway was Grant’s go to shooting guard for the Cougars at the start of last season, averaging 15.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists.

After netting 13 points in the first half of a 90-63 victory over South Carolina State, Galloway suffered a season ending knee injury. Galloway reached the conclusion that his time at Charleston had run its course and mulled over several options before electing to follow Grant to the Chestnut Hill.

Galloway did his rehab in Boston over the summer with BC trainer Nick Gallotto and strength and conditioning coach Marc Proto, who came with Grant from Charleston. He began retooling his floor skills in training camp, a process facilitated by an in-depth knowledge of Grant’s system. Galloway got his first taste of BC basketball while playing limited minutes in a recent scrimmage with Marquette.

Based on Galloway’s work in Charleston against Power-5 opponents and the grueling Colonial Athletic Association schedule, Grant feels he is capable of withstanding the rough and tumble of the ACC.

“He was part of some big wins we had against Power-5 teams and made a lot of threes and scored the ball,” said Grant. “I’ve seen him in games against ACC and Big East and on the road in the A-10. I’ve seen how he acted and functioned and he was able to produce.

“He’s comeback beautifully and I’m glad he’s here. I am definitely happy he is here because he can really shoot the ball and open up the lanes for our drivers. With his weapon of shooting the ball and sharing his understanding of our system and his understanding of me with the guys in the locker room.”

Galloway has been a knowledgeable intermediary for Grant with the incumbent players, transfers and freshmen on the roster. But the player that serves as Grant’s mouthpiece on the floor is returning point guard Makai Ashton-Langford, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound, graduate student from Worcester.

“I felt right as soon as we started getting through everything and then it started falling into place,” said Ashton-Langford. “The point guard is supposed to be the extension of the coach on the floor and the coach is the main leader so whatever he says, goes. “
