BB&N makes statement to NEPSAC bowl committee

GROTON — If there was any doubt that BB&N was worthy of a NEPSAC bowl bid, they put that to rest on Saturday.

Bo Maccormack rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns as BB&N came through with a convincing 28-6 road win over Lawrence Academy on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in Groton.

BB&N (7-1) now awaits the postseason slate set to be revealed on Sunday to see if its overall body of work is worthy of a NEPSAC bowl bid. Its overall record coupled with Saturday’s win over the host Spartans should make the Knights all but a shoe-in for postseason play.

“It’s very exciting that if we get selected it will be our eighth bowl game in 16 years,” BB&N coach Mike WiIley said. “We’re hoping for a nice call tomorrow afternoon. I hope they select us and give us another chance to play football.”

The Knights controlled the game for nearly its entirety with Maccormack’s efforts on the ground catalyzing long drives while the defense totaled three turnovers in all. Ronan Hanafin and Tom Porel each had interceptions while Arizona-bound linebacker Tyler Martin forced a fumble.

“The picks were really big,” Willey said. “Ronan had a great game all over the field and Porel just made an awesome play.”

After a scoreless first quarter that was largely plagued by penalties, BB&N created some breathing room in the second stanza. Martin’s forced fumble — recovered by Jake Nicholson — set the Knights up with prime field position and Maccormack rushed in from 3 yards out to give the Knights a 7-0 lead. Moments later the Knights regained possession as Hanafin undercut a receiver for an interception. Hanafin’s interception set up the Knights second score of the day as their offense went on a six-play drive capped off by a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Shane Hanafin to go in front 14-0.

Lawrence Academy got behind 21-0 as the game turned to the fourth quarter, but got on the board on a terrific diving catch in the end zone by Tucker Brown to trim the deficit to 21-6. Knights do-it-all playmaker Ty Harding, however, quickly put the game to bed as he returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards to put BB&N up 28-6 with just over six minutes remaining.
