Hundreds left jobs since Charlie Baker administration vaccine mandate took effect
About two weeks after the Baker administration’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate took effect, it’s finally sharing data about the vaccinated: almost 94% met the Oct. 17 deadline, and hundreds have left their posts or been suspended.
“The Baker-Polito Administration is encouraged that nearly all active employees in the executive branch have complied with Governor Baker’s executive order,” Gov. Charlie Baker said in a statement. “The Administration is making every effort possible to work with the small number of employees not yet in compliance and is reviewing outstanding exemption requests on a rolling basis.”
Since the mandate was announced, over 12,000 out of almost 42,000 total became newly fully vaccinated or had received at least one dose. As written, Baker’s mandate would require non-compliant employees to be laid off.
Executive branch employees include both State Troopers and Department of Corrections officers, who tried and failed in court to resist the mandate.
The administration announced that, as of Oct. 27, 93.7% of employees, or almost 40,000, have been fully vaccinated and submitted their attestations by the deadline, received approved exemptions, or have had their vaccination status verified by their agency.
Five percent of employees, or about 2,100, are having their compliance reviewed by the agency or are awaiting an exemption approval. Of the remaining employees, 0.9%, or 362, are on a five or 10-day suspension for noncompliance, and 0.3%, or 141, have departed. Of the departures, 11 were involuntary resignations and 130 were voluntary who left due to noncompliance with the mandate.
This is a developing story …
