Emily Burns to challenge Jake Auchincloss in 4th Congressional district
Newton mother of three Emily Burns said she’s jumping off the sidelines and launching her campaign in the 4th Congressional district to prove “freedom isn’t a fairytale,” after months of pandemic restrictions.
“I’m sick and tired of our leaders using so-called science as an excuse to strip away our rights. They’re not keeping us safe, they’re keeping us scared and when their policies fail, they blame us,” Burns said in her launch video that went live on Thursday.
“I’m going to Washington to take back our lives from big government and bring freedom back to the land of the free,” she added.
Burns, a political newcomer and libertarian who is running as a Republican, has targeted her campaign not against her opponent Rep. Jake Auchincloss, but against the avalanche of pandemic rules, regulations and restrictions she says have hindered life long enough.
Auchincloss’s name isn’t mentioned once in her video or press release announcing her candidacy.
“Look no further than COVID. One failed ‘box checking’ policy after another. Then, to avoid acknowledging their failures, they blame us, move the goal posts, and implement another useless, divisive policy. There is no end game, because this works for politicians and bureaucrats seeking to consolidate power.”
Burns made a splash with her Thursday launch, showing she’s serious about her single-issue campaign by anteing up with $250,000 of her own money to seed her campaign account and hiring heavy-hitting Republican consulting firm Axiom Strategies.
All nine Massachusetts Congressional districts are currently held by Democrats and Burns will face an uphill battle in the district where Auchincloss beat his former competitor, Julie Hall, by a margin of 22 points.
