Tornado touched down on Cape Cod as Hurricane Ida’s remnants ripped through Massachusetts: National Weather Service
A tornado touched down on Cape Cod early Thursday morning, as the remnants of Hurricane Ida ripped through the region.
The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado in Dennis about 12 hours after the region was under a tornado warning during the middle of the night.
“EF-0 Tornado confirmed by NWS Storm Survey in Dennis, MA on Cape Cod,” the National Weather Service’s Boston office tweeted.
“Max winds near 75 mph,” NWS Boston added. “Damage was concentrated near intersection of E Bay View Rd & Wampanoag Trail. More details will follow this evening once complete survey is finished.”
The remnants of Hurricane Ida barreled through Massachusetts, delivering massive amounts of rain in a short time period. The highest rainfall totals were recorded in New Bedford with 9.50 inches and Fairhaven with 8.22 inches.
Streets were flooded, resulting in cars underwater and impassable roadways. There were reports of drivers and passengers needing to get rescued.
Basements were also flooded throughout the region.
