Patriots QB Mac Jones talks improvements, avoids talking Tom Brady

While no one could blame Sunday’s loss to New Orleans on the performance of Mac Jones, the rookie quarterback is keenly aware of the adjustments he has to make in order to lead an offense that has averaged just 18 points through three games more effectively.

Jones reiterated several times during his weekly spot on WEEI’s “Merloni & Fauria” on Monday that he needs to improve, specifically when it comes to facing the type of pressure that saw him take 11 hits against the Saints.

“I think a lot of it has to do with me getting the ball out quick and reading the defense quicker and all that stuff will take care of itself,” said Jones. “I can do a better job, and just watching film, don’t move unless you have to, and if I have to make a play with my feet I will, but at the end of the day we want to get the ball to our skill players and let them run and do what they do.”

The pressure will certainly be ratcheted up this week, and not just by the opposing defense as the eyes of the entire NFL will be on Sunday night’s primetime game with Tampa Bay.

Jones wouldn’t take the bait when asked about Tom Brady’s return to Foxboro, saying he didn’t pay much attention to the drama surrounding his departure while at Alabama. Instead, he stressed putting the Saints game behind them and not letting the hype of this week affect their preparation.

“Just fixing the corrections from the game we just played is obviously really important, and then moving on with the game plan for this week,” said Jones. “It will definitely be exciting. Tampa Bay is a great team and, you know, it’s a new week so we are excited. The only thing we can do is focus on each day and when Sunday comes we’ll just go out there and play as hard as we can and it will be good.”
