Patriots DE Deatrich Wise: New Pats O-line is one of the best I’ve seen
After the reacquisition of offensive tackle Trent Brown and re-signing of center David Andrews, it was apparent early this offseason the Patriots offensive line could be special.
It’s expected to run at least seven deep, with Michael Onwenu back after ranking among the NFL’s best O-linemen as a rookie, now flanked at left guard by Andrews and stud left tackle Isaiah Wynn. Ted Karras also returned to back up all three interior spots, having started at center for the Dolphins last season. Second-year offensive tackle Justin Herron is positioned as the team’s new swing tackle.
And then there’s Shaq Mason, annually among the league’s best run blockers at right guard. Around several minor injuries last year, the Pats ranked sixth in run-blocking, per Pro Football Focus grades, and 15th in pass-blocking. Assuming better health in 2021, it’s likely they’ll surpass those rankings this season.
In fact, Pats defensive end Deatrich Wise said Tuesday he might not see a better front five all year.
“I believe we have one of the best offensive lines that I’ve seen so far. These guys come to work every day, they’re big, they’re stronger and they’ve gotten better, so I feel like this is pretty much our best look that we’re going to see,” Wise said. “I feel much pride in going against these guys every day.”
