Patriots backup QB Brian Hoyer shouldn’t be away too long
Patriots backup quarterback Brian Hoyer was among those released by the team, a source confirmed to the Herald.
But his stay away from Gillette Stadium shouldn’t be for long. The smart money says to count on him to return. It makes too much sense.
First off, the veteran quarterback, who has been with the Patriots for years over multiple stints, doesn’t want to go anywhere. His family is rooted here in New England. He had turned down other offers in the offseason before signing with the Patriots.
Second, he knows the system better than just about anyone in the building, save for Josh McDaniels. And, he’s been a terrific mentor and sounding board for Mac Jones.
It’s not likely the Patriots will want to start from scratch, and teach another backup quarterback the system, especially one who has been helping decipher it for Jones. If the Patriots extend an offer, Hoyer, who doesn’t have to clear waivers, will be back.
He was likely released because the Patriots had to go through some roster gymnastics to get some players on the 53-man roster, and then designate them for injured reserve to return.
So once the Patriots make all of those transactions, and regain roster spots, chances are very good Hoyer return.
So, for the moment, the Patriots are down to just rookie Jones as the only quarterback on the active roster. Jarret Stidham is on the physically unable to perform list.
