Massachusetts coronavirus cases spike 4,081 over the weekend, positive test rate is down
Massachusetts health officials on Monday reported more than 4,000 new coronavirus cases from over the weekend, a significantly higher count than last week, though the state’s positive test rate did decline.
The 4,081 cases over the three-day period was 746 more than the 3,335 reported infections from last weekend.
The positive test rate from this weekend was 2.33%, compared to the positive test rate of 2.41% last weekend.
Case counts have been rising at a rapid pace as the more highly contagious delta variant spreads across the Bay State. The daily average of cases is now 1,154 infections.
The daily average of percent positivity is now 2.51%, which is down from 2.98% a few weeks ago.
State health officials also reported 10 new COVID deaths from over the weekend, bringing the state’s total recorded death toll to 18,229.
The daily average of daily deaths is now 6.3, which compares to the pandemic-low of 1.1 in mid July.
Hospitalizations continued to go up over the weekend. The 31 new patients now brings the state’s COVID hospitalization total to 603 patients.
There are now 156 patients in intensive care units, and 96 patients are currently intubated.
Of the 603 total COVID patients, 157 patients have been fully vaccinated — or 26%. Those who are unvaccinated are at a much higher risk for a severe case and hospitalization.
The total count of 603 COVID patients is more than seven times the record-low count of 80 COVID patients on July 4. Since then, cases have been rising amid the delta variant, and hospitalizations are climbing.
Nearly 4.5 million people in Massachusetts are now fully vaccinated.
