Hurricane Ida’s remnants to arrive in Massachusetts, flash flooding is possible
Heavy rainfall from the hurricane that slammed into Louisiana on Sunday is expected to arrive in Massachusetts later this week, according to the National Weather Service.
Tropical moisture associated with the remnants of Hurricane Ida is expected to arrive Wednesday into Thursday with the risk of heavy rain and flooding in southern New England.
The main concern is the potential for a band of very heavy rainfall, which could result in flash flooding across parts of the region.
“We still need to hammer down where the heaviest rain will fall,” said Bill Leatham, meteorologist at the National Weather Service Boston’s office.
There could be a swath of territory that gets 2 to 4 inches of rain.
“We could have some flash flooding concerns,” Leatham said.
Wednesday night into early Thursday looks like the heaviest rainfall for the region.
Hurricane Ida — an extremely dangerous, life-threatening Category 4 hurricane — barreled into Louisiana on Sunday with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph.
The National Hurricane Center reported that Ida made landfall at Port Fourchon in Lower Lafourche Parish late in the morning. Catastrophic wind and surge impacts were expected along the Louisiana coast.
Before the remnants arrive from the powerful hurricane, forecasters are expecting a much warmer and more humid Monday ahead of a cold front. This could produce scattered thunderstorms, including a few strong to severe storms in the afternoon and early evening.
The main threats are damaging wind gusts and heavy downpours, which may lead to flooding.
“Monday will be pretty uncomfortable,” Leatham said. “It should feel pretty sticky out there with the heat and humidity. A few spots could hit 90 degrees.”
The cold front moves through Monday night, and then high pressure briefly returns Tuesday with drier and less humid air.
“Tuesday looks like the pick of the week,” the meteorologist said. “Mid 80s, and dry and quiet weather.”
Then the remnants from Hurricane Ida arrive on Wednesday. High temps should be in the mid 70s.
After the heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday, drier and cooler conditions should be here heading into Labor Day weekend. Temps should be in the low to mid 70s.
