Boston Public Schools superintendent apologizes for letting license expire

Boston Superintendent Brenda Cassellius apologized to the school committee after what she characterized as a “miscommunication” that led to her superintendent license expiring last week.

“I apologize for this distraction,” Cassellius told the city’s school committee in a meeting Wednesday night that came just minutes after The Boston Globe broke the story of the license expiration.

The license ran out Saturday, at the end of July.

Cassellius, referring to “something in the news today,” chalked up the screw-up to a “misunderstanding between me and my team” over how emergency licenses work.

Cassellius has run the district for the past two years after coming to the Hub from Minnesota, where she was the state’s top education official who’d previously worked as a superintendent.

She said the confusion came from pandemic-era license extensions, which she said she thought lasted longer. Cassellius said Massachusetts Education Commissioner Jeff Riley called her Monday night and told her that her license has lapsed, she said it took her by surprise.

She said she’d scheduled the remaining exam that’s the final part of the licensure process for Aug. 14.

“I take this very seriously,” Cassellius said.

The school committee by a 4-1 vote extended Cassellius’ contract last month.

This is a developing story …
