Patriots release WR Devin Smith

The Patriots released wide receiver Devin Smith on Tuesday.

Smith, a 29-year-old journeyman, was a long shot to make the 53-man roster. Smith originally joined the team when he signed to the Pats’ practice squad last December. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound wideout never played in a game for the Patriots, but was present for the team’s OTAs and minicamp.

Smith was placed on the Physically Unable to Play list last week.

He entered the league as a second-round pick of the Jets in 2015. Smith spent three years in New York, spent a season out of football and re-entered the NFL with Dallas in 2019. He made two starts for the Cowboys that season, before being released in 2020 and bouncing to Houston and New England last year.
