Worcester Police sets up fund for family of police officer who died, funeral will be Thursday

The Worcester Police Department has set up a fund for the family of the police officer who died while trying to save a boy who drowned last week.

The city of Worcester also on Sunday announced that Officer Enmanuel “Manny” Familia’s calling hours will be this Wednesday, followed by the funeral on Thursday.

As the police department and city continue to mourn the loss of Familia, police officers attended his son’s baseball game on Sunday morning.

His 13-year-old son, Jovan, then threw out the first pitch at the Worcester Red Sox game in the afternoon, as family members and police officers gathered behind the pitching mound.

Familia — a five-year veteran of the department and husband and father of two — on Friday tried to save a 14-year-old boy at Green Hill Pond, but both Familia and the boy drowned. The boy has been identified as Troy Love.

“The City of Worcester and the Worcester Police Department continues to mourn the loss of Officer Enmanuel Familia following his heroic efforts to save a teenager drowning in the pond at Green Hill Park,” the city said in a statement on Sunday.

Worcester Police announced that donations are now being accepted for the Familia Family through the Worcester Police Department Credit Union.

Checks can be mailed to: The Familia Family Memorial Fund, c/o Worcester Police Federal Credit Union, 805 West Boylston St., Worcester, MA 01606.

Massachusetts State Police Col. Christopher Mason on Sunday called Familia’s death a “tragic loss,” and he also addressed the wounding of Braintree Police officers Billy Cushing and Matthew Donoghue and the killing of Braintree K-9 Kitt as they responded to a domestic incident.

“Friday’s terrible incidents in Worcester and Braintree have prompted all of us in law enforcement to pause and reflect upon the oath we pledged and the dangers inherent in the public safety mission to which we have committed ourselves,” Mason said in a statement.

“They have modeled for us what is noble and right about about law enforcement: service to others above self,” he said of the officers. “It is that spirit that inspires us this day and strengthens our resolve to carry on their decent and good work in support of the people of the Commonwealth. The Massachusetts State Police are honored to stand with our brothers and sisters at the Worcester and Braintree Police Departments during this difficult time; we thank them for their partnership and dedication.”

Mason also recognized Trooper Amy Waterman, who “joined with the brave Worcester Officers who entered the water Friday to save the lives of others. Her selflessness and courage are nothing less than remarkable.”

Calling hours will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church, 44 Temple St. on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at St. John’s Catholic Church on Thursday at 10 a.m.
