Suspects in killing of college student held without bail

NEWPORT, R.I. — Two men facing charges in connection with the fatal stabbing of a University of Rhode Island student at a house party in Newport last weekend were held without bail at their arraignment.

Tyrese Poulsen, 18, faces a murder charge in the death of Maximus Julian, 22, of Little Compton, who was stabbed during a fight at a rental home in Newport at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday and was taken off life support on Tuesday.

Poulsen did not enter a plea at Thursday’s arraignment.

His attorney, Joseph Voccola, requested a bond hearing for his client be set as soon as possible, The Newport Daily News reports.

Jamaal Reid, 19, faces charges of harboring a criminal and disorderly conduct. He did not enter a plea and was held without bond as a bail violator in a previous case. No defense attorney was listed in court records.

Julian was a business and marketing student at URI where he was on the dean’s list and scheduled to graduate in the fall, the university said in a statement.

Julian’s death was the city’s first homicide since 2015, the newspaper reports.
