Pan-Mass Challenge holds kickoff event at Fenway Park, sets $52 million fundraising goal
The Pan-Mass Challenge recently held a kickoff event for its yearly Dana-Farber Cancer Institute fundraising campaign, as riders got the chance to ride on the field at Fenway Park.
The PMC has also announced that the fundraising goal for the 2021 bike-a-thon is $52 million, following last year’s $50 million raised for cancer research, treatment and care at Dana-Farber.
On Sunday, the PMC held its first event of the season, gathering at Fenway Park to celebrate PMC’s Winter Cycle: Spring Edition.
Local instructors led PMC Winter Cycle riders through stationary cycling classes on the field at Fenway. Riders also had the option to participate virtually, livestreaming classes from Fenway to their home bikes.
“It was great to be able to be with people again, to hug, to cry, to smile together,” said Billy Starr, founder and executive director of the PMC. “This is what the PMC does. We get people together and focus on the mission and raise money for Dana-Farber.”
The PMC has already generated more than $900,000 in donations, with fundraising efforts continuing through July 1. At that point, a donor will double the fundraising with a matching grant, up to $2 million.
PMC 2021 will take place on Aug. 7 and 8, with riders choosing from 16 different routes from 25 to 211 miles. Nearly 6,000 people have already registered.
