Milton moves into Bay State Conference tourney championship with win over Walpole
Just weeks after falling to Walpole, Milton reasserted itself as the team to beat in the Bay State League.
Brian Foley threw a complete game, allowing just one run and scattering three hits, while Charlie Walker blasted a two-run home run as Milton earned a berth in the Bay State Conference Tournament championship with an 11-1 win over Walpole at Cunningham Park on Wednesday.
Milton (13-2) will take on Braintree for the tournament crown Saturday at Braintree at 3 p.m.
“Walpole is a good, well-coached team. They always play tough regardless of the opponent,” Milton coach Brendan Morrissey said. “We love the guys that we have on the mound and we have more than just a few arms.”
Foley continued a string of excellent pitching for the Wildcats since the beginning of the season. With Foley and Walker leading the way, Milton’s pitching staff has combined to let up three earned runs or less on 10 different occasions this year.
Milton scratched out a run in the bottom of the first, and expanded its lead in the bottom of the second when Walker delivered the key hit of the game, belting a two-run home run over the trees in center field as part of a three-run second to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead.
“Charlie has been excellent for us at the plate this year and in general all of our guys stepped up,” Morrissey said.
Walpole got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single from Zach Oles that scored Luke Jancowitz, but Foley remained poised. The junior righty allowed just one other hit on the afternoon, pitching to contact with a four-pitch mix that consistently generated weak contact.
“My two-seam was running a lot today that mixed with my slider,” Foley said. “Our team played one of our best complete overall games of the year today which really helped me out.”
Milton blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth by scoring six times in the inning, highlighted by a Jimmy Fallon two-run base hit to take a commanding 10-1 advantage.
