Massachusetts series of drownings: Teen dies after Quincy beach drowning, Dedham teen in ‘critical’ condition, child recovered from Amesbury lake

Three people in the area Sunday are the latest victims in a series of drownings that have claimed at least seven lives in the last three weeks in Massachusetts.

A 19-year-old man who was pulled from the water of a Quincy beach died Sunday afternoon, according to police. He was rushed to the hospital after he went underwater and did not resurface, police said.

Police around 2:15 p.m. received a report that someone had entered the water at Mount Street Beach and disappeared. Multiple agencies responded to the area, including two civilian divers who happened to be in the area, according to police.

The man was later pronounced dead at South Shore Hospital.

Around the same time on Sunday, a child in Amesbury’s Lake Gardner was recovered from the water without a pulse.

Amesbury paramedics performed CPR and transported the child to Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport. Paramedics continued working on the child at the hospital with emergency room staff, and were able to establish a pulse. The child was then transported to a Boston area hospital.

“Amesbury’s Police and Fire teams responded quickly and worked together to locate the victim in the water,” acting Police Chief Craig Bailey said in a statement. “There is an investigation underway and more details will be shared with the public at a later date.”

Also over the weekend, a 17-year-old boy was pulled from a pool at a Dedham graduation party, police there said. The boy was in “critical” condition Sunday.

Police at around 12:30 a.m. Sunday received multiple 911 calls about an unresponsive teen at a possible drowning incident in a backyard pool on Netta Road. When officers arrived, they saw people performing CPR on the 17-year-old boy.

First responders then took over care, and they transported the boy to a Boston hospital.

The latest incidents come after the double drowning in Worcester on Friday, when Officer Enmanuel Familia tried to save the life of 14-year-old Troy Love who was drowning in the pond at Green Hill Park. They both died.

In mid-May, two Brockton cousins — Rafael Andrande, 13, and Tiago Depina, 12, — drowned in Waldo Lake. Then on May 26, 16-year-old boy Jeremias Jimenez drowned at Learned Pond in Framingham. A day later, a 39-year-old Quincy man who was at Houghton’s Pond in Milton with his son drowned after entering the pond to retrieve a soccer ball.

Police have launched an investigation in the Dedham drowning incident to learn how the boy ended up being submerged in the water.

The incident occurred at 36 Netta Road, which is owned by James Coughlin, according to Dedham’s assessor records. Coughlin was a Massachusetts State Police detective captain, and recently ran for Norfolk County sheriff.

Coughlin could not be immediately reached for comment on Sunday.
