Massachusetts reports less than 100 new coronavirus cases for first time since last June

Massachusetts health officials on Monday reported less than 100 new coronavirus cases for the first time since last June.

The daily report of 89 new COVID cases continues the trend of significantly lower infection counts amid the vaccine rollout.

The last time the state had reported less than 100 new virus cases in a day was on June 30.

The seven-day average of confirmed cases has dropped to 116 infections, which is a record low for the pandemic. The average percent positivity is down to 0.53%, which is also a pandemic low. The state’s estimated active case count has declined to 4,195 cases.

State health officials on Monday also reported four more virus deaths, which brings the total recorded death toll to 17,915 people. The seven-day average of four daily deaths is a record low for the pandemic.

Meanwhile, nearly 20,000 coronavirus vaccine shots were given in Massachusetts during the most recent day of vaccine data, as the pace of the vaccine rollout slows in the Bay State.

The state’s daily vaccination report showed more than 8.1 million total doses have been administered, and more than 3.8 million people are fully vaccinated.

The more than 8.1 million doses break down to more than 4.2 million people who have received at least one dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine; nearly 3.6 million people who have received both doses of Pfizer or Moderna; and 257,807 people who have received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Those totals represent an increase of 19,641 doses from Sunday’s report.

The state’s goal is to hit 4.1 million fully vaccinated people this month.

Statewide hospitalizations have also been dropping during the vaccine rollout. Hospitalizations on Monday did tick up by three patients, bringing the total to 181 patients. There are 65 patients in the ICU, and 35 patients are intubated.
