Dennis White saga turns uglier as allegations fly between family members

Embattled Police Commissioner Dennis White and his attorneys blasted his ex-wife and daughter following their accusations of abuse in the latest turn in the ugly and increasingly public saga over the fate of Boston’s top cop.

White’s ex-wife, Sybil, spoke to multiple media outlets on Wednesday, saying that White had abused her during their relationship. Their daughter Brittany backed her up, saying that Dennis White had abused his now-ex-wife and others in the family.

That comes after White’s lawyers had rolled out multiple video interviews, including with White, his sister-in-law and his daughter Tiffany, with all of them saying that Sybil White — now Sybil Mason — had been violent and abusive.

These family clashes culminated in White’s attorneys on Thursday filing an affidavit he’d signed saying that he’d never assaulted Brittany, who he said at one point as an adult had to be removed from his house by police.

“I never ever physically abused her,” White wrote in the affidavit.

White has been on leave since Feb. 3, two days after then-Mayor Martin Walsh promoted him. Details from internal affairs investigations and other documents from the 1990s alleging abuse by White surfaced, leading to an independent investigation.

Acting Mayor Kim Janey continues to mull White’s fate after holding a pre-termination hearing for him Wednesday. Three weeks ago, Janey had hurried to move to fire the commissioner as she released the report from the investigation, but White had sued, holding that up. She is moving more slowly this time, giving White days instead of hours of notice for the requisite hearing, and after more than a day following it, she hasn’t axed him.

White’s attorney Nick Carter in a Thursday letter to the city asked for Sybil Mason’s internal affairs files to be released, because she too is a Boston police officer and “her allegations are central to the matter pending before you: whether to remove Commissioner White.”
